On the 46th kilometer between Tallinn and Tartu there is a speed indicator .. it`s the place where couple of weeks ago I was driving 4 kilometers faster than allowed and got a nice big fine for it! And then there are another 146 kilometers of trees, fields and little wooden houses…
I´ve constantly been on the road since my childhood, passing by longer and shorter distances.. I can still remember the times when I was visiting Russia with family: speed was lower and limitations were almost nonexistent, parents piled pillows on the backseat where me and my sister then played our games and at night my grandmother was singing songs to my father to keep him awake..
Then came my own roads: passing the same road between my parent´s house and university several times each week, one bag with books, pencils and drawings on one hand and the other with dirty clothes which needed to be washed on the other hand. Of course, on the way back I also had the third additional bag full of home made food..After that came my rides with my very own first car Renault Twingo- a little big-faced friend who passed enormous distances and even offered a shelter for several nights when parties didn´t want to end or the way home turned out to be longer than expected…
Another step-moving to Tallinn-meant piling up the car that I even could´t notice the president´s cars trying to pass me until they finally decided to switch on the sirens. Of course I´ll never forget moving to London, being picked up from the airport and driven to my little apartment next to Chinese cafe. And after that moving back to Tallinn again, starting with my first designer´s assistant work at Monton, first fashion shows and catwalks when all my body was covered with cold sweat and the only thought of how to save my models from falling off the stage. Another important road was down the aisle hand-in-hand with Jürgen and then of course the ride to maternity home…
My first time in New York and ride through Broadway at night gave absolutely new meaning to Mondrian Broadway Boogie-Woogie in lights. However lately the main roads in my life abut on moving fabric reels from one place to another. Even now I´m actually on the road-driving to my parents´place, though this time to celebrate my mom´s jubilee with the whole family, the very same people I´ve shared my rides my whole life, the ones I´ve picked up and the ones who have picked me up in return…
All those flights and business trips, different time zones and exciting cultures, speed limits, crossroads, guideposts, city signs, highways and country roads, numerous stops for peeing, roadworks, hitchhikers … unknown people in unknown cars, yet the road fellows…
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
