600 meters of fabric for bulk order is a bit too much for my small and exclusive collection. Maybe for my next one, but right now, for the Spring-Summer 2011 it´s way too much. But that´s the reality, take it or leave it, if the designer is not able to use the whole 600 meters of fabric that is the minimum amount offered by the supplier, there´s just no other way than to drop the idea and the dream of using that specific fabric at all, no matter how important or how necessary it might have been for the whole collection.
But it´s not only my own problem, all designers behind the small exclusive collections meet the same questions every season: how and where to find amazing fabrics that would fit together as puzzle pieces and unite the collection, but in the same time be at a reasonable prize? And the most difficult part is that you have to keep adamant in everything concerning the quality of the cloth if you want that your band of fabrics would play perfectly… So in the end when I´ve overcome all those hurdles, somehow everything still comes to naught, cause my order doesn´t reach the minimum 600 meters! Ok, I´ll abandon the fabric, but at the very same time I can see how my collection starts to fade away and so the entirety that I value the most has gone …
What next? I´m trying to negotiate and find new ways, but as in life generally, you can´t really replace anything, if it´s gone, then it´s gone. You have to give up searching for the substitutions and then the new and interesting solutions come to you themselves, of course they are from totally different opera and therefore bring along changes in the whole concept… which, of course again, means racing with time for me, but meeting the deadlines is one of the inevitable rules in the game of fashion!
But the truth is that none of us has born into this world nor into the fashion world as a grown-up or as a big successful designer. But the one who is a small entrepreneur today can become a powerful client already tomorrow ordering kilometers of fabric without even blinking an eye. But sadly the fabric suppliers usually forget that fact and they even don´t bother themselves with less profitable contracts with small buyers and what´s even more sad, at least for me, is that the industry forgets another vital truth laying there: contemporary young designers are actually the ones who feed the spirit of fashion and keep it fresh, they are brave enough to experiment, play and challenge the boundries and therefore give inspiration for whole fashion industry. So actually the fabric suppliers on one end of this everlasting chain are responsible for keeping up the world and developing the future of fashion and culture on the whole… If only they could open their eyes and see that the help and co-operation with the the new comers today may not be that profitable, but these are the ones who create our tomorrow and develop our culture the day after that….
